CSI- Case Study Instruction for QEP

CSI Awareness Campaign

One component of accreditation is the Quality Enhancement Program (QEP), an on-going project required of all colleges and schools in the Southern Association (SACS). The focus on continual self-assessment and improvement is a key to maintaining educational standards. The QEP focuses on an area identified by the college.

Sherman's QEP for the next four years is Case Study Instruction (CSI), which involves introducing students to the process of case management through using case studies in classes. Case studies require active student interaction with materials, which reinforces student learning. Because Sherman students have often scored lower than expected on the case study sections of the National Boards, CSI was a natural candidate for the project. Download QEP document.

Case Management is targeted as the focus for our first year CSI. The first year Case Management Learning Community members include Dr. Bill Fehl, Dr. Cindy Gibbon, Dr. Maria Michelin, Dr. Arlene Welch and Dr. Stephanie Johnson. These faculty members are engaged in an intensive instructional design workshop, led by QEP Director Joy Gayler. Using tools from the workshop, the Learning Community will include innovative teaching strategies with case studies.

The CSI Awareness Campaign launched at Bagelfest on October 16 with a case study game. Dr. John Porter volunteered to play the part of the patient. Clues were provided on the website, through emails, over the intranet and in student assemblies. Two teams of students were awarded prizes on October 31st during the Halloween Festivities for their assessment of Dr. Porter's mysterious symptoms. Visit the CSI weblog for more information.
