FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FEBRUARY 2, 2005
Sherman to Host Spine Tingling Poetry Slam
The hottest upstate poets and wannbes will join
Sherman students at the college’s first-ever
Spine Tingling Poetry Slam on Saturday, February
26, at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds from the slam will
benefit Sherman College’s Chiropractic Student
Government. Cover charge of $10 per person
includes a t-shirt and a food coupon. Door
prizes will be awarded, and food and beverages
will be available. Kimberly Simms of Wits End
Poetry and Greenville Slammaster will host the
event.
A poetry slam is, simply put, the competitive
art of performance poetry as seen on television
and in coffee houses across the nation. A slam
puts a dual emphasis on writing and performance,
which encourages poets to focus on what they are
saying and how they are saying it. Members of
the audience and designated judges will evaluate
poets for their three-minute, original
constructions, without the use of props,
costumes or musical instruments. The numerical
scores the poets receive from the judges will be
tallied, and the top three poets will be awarded
cash prizes ($200, $100, $50).
