CE Admin Nadia Alley Bikes Cross-Country
to Eliminate Poverty Housing

Nadia Alley will be biking the long road across the southern United States from Jacksonville, Florida to San Fransciso, California. Following hurricane Katrina’s devastating impact on the Gulf Coast in 2005, Bike & Build re-routed Southern U.S. in 2006 to join the ongoing rebuilding effort in the Gulf Coast. The second week of the trip will be spent building in areas that are still in need of hurricane reconstruction. From there the group continues their trek West onto the ranges of Northern Texas, the deserts of the South West and, eventually, the coast of Northern California.

Nadia Alley

"I'm working on a Master's degree in special education at Converse College. Being in the public school systems I meet family after family who can't afford a decent home and live each day just to survive. 43% of South Carolinians can't afford fair market rent! That one statistic makes my heart hurt. And, after visiting New Orleans after hurricane Katrina my eyes were wide open to reality. I feel it's my duty, as a citizen and human being, to give back to the world, at least a portion of, what it has given me. " --Nadia Alley

Nadia is working to raise $4,000 for affordable housing through Bike and Build.

Nadia will be finishing her masters degree at Converse College in December. We will miss her here at Sherman. Shay Yates will be taking on Nadia's duties in the Continuing Education Department.
