Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic takes pride in maintaining an intimate and safe atmosphere. However, no college is immune to crime. This report is intended to provide information about campus safety and related services for current and prospective students and employees.

Assuring the safety and well-being of students, faculty and staff on campus is a primary commitment of the college. In conjunction with the Office of Student Affairs, the Security Department has instituted an array of safety measures and programs to deal with issues of crime and personal security.

Security Officers
Security officers include all members of the security and maintenance department as well as contract security guards. Contracted security guards have full arrest powers and are licensed through the SC Law Enforcement Division. Other individuals with designated security functions include the dean of Student Affairs and the vice president for business and finance. Spartanburg County Sheriff's Office has jurisdiction on campus for the determination and investigation of criminal activity.

Walking the Campus
The security department routinely patrols the campus. However, you should take responsibility for your safety.
Below are safety tips for everyone:

-Travel in groups - never alone.

-Stay alert and don't be distracted! Be aware of your surroundings.

-Trust your instincts. Leave an area if you are uncomfortable.

-Walk only in areas that are well lit.

-If you are uneasy about walking to your car after dark, call the security
department and ask for an escort. The reception desk at each building will
contact the security department for you.

Preventing Theft
The college offers a number of programs dealing with crime prevention and safety. Information is provided to new students at orientation sessions. Presentations on specific topics are made upon request. Program topics include campus crime, drugs, rape and vehicle security. If you are interested in any of these, please contact the security department or the dean of student services.

Drug and Alcohol Policy
Drug and alcohol abuse are significant threats to the safety and security of any community, and college campuses are not exempt. Sherman College enforces a strong anti-drug and alcohol policy to prevent the illegal use of drugs and the abuse of alcohol on or off campus. Sherman College also complies with the Drug-Free School Act of 1989, which requires college officials to turn over to authorities, for arrest and prosecution, any person who illegally uses drugs.

The complete Drug and Alcohol Policy is distributed to new students and employees each quarter. Copies are available at all times from the Student Affairs department. Generally, the policy prohibits the unlawful manufacture, possession, use, sale or distribution of controlled substances, alcohol and drug paraphernalia. Penalties may include expulsion and criminal prosecution.

The dean of Student Affairs provides a variety of services aimed at preventing drug and alcohol abuse. In addition to educational programs and assemblies, assistance is provided to any student, faculty or staff member concerned about drug or alcohol use. If the need for referral arises, the individual will be directed to the appropriate community resource.

Policy on Sexual Assault
Sherman College is dedicated to maintaining a campus environment that actively discourages and condemns violence of any kind. The college does not tolerate or ignore acts of sexual violence.

A student charged with sexual assault on or off campus can be prosecuted under criminal statutes and disciplined by the college. College discipline may be handed down with or without prosecution by local, state or federal authorities. College discipline includes, but is not limited to, probation, suspension or expulsion.

The full policy on sexual assault may be found in the student handbook or from the student services office.

In accordance with Federal Regulations of the Cleary Act, the South Carolina online Sex Offender Registry can be viewed by click here.

Reporting Sexual Assaults
The College encourages everyone to report any incident of sexual assault on campus immediately to the security department (599-4852), student services department (x.224), or the business office (x.243). These offices also stand ready to help anyone who is the victim of an assault off campus. You may use our online form to report a crime.

Medical attention: It is essential that a victim of a sexual assault receive immediate medical attention, to protect against injury and disease and to assist in later prosecution. Before receiving such attention, the victim should not shower, wash any body part, douche, brush teeth, drink liquids or change clothes. The victim should also avoid urinating, and if there has been oral sexual contact, should not smoke or eat.

Counseling: Counseling can be critical to regaining one's emotional balance following a sexual assault. The dean of Student Affairs is trained and ready to assist or refer to another competent professional. All college assistance is free and strictly confidential.

Preventing Theft
Most crimes reported to college security involve property rather than personal danger. You can minimize your chances of becoming a victim by remembering that college campuses are not immune to crime and by following these common sense tips:

Lock Up! Lock your car. Lock your purse in a drawer or your locker and lock your office door even if you're only stepping down the hall or teaching a class.

Identify your belongings. Put your name or other identifying marks somewhere in your textbooks. Engrave items that might interest a thief - equipment, bicycles, CD players and anything else that is portable and valuable. Marking valuables is a proven way to discourage theft.

You may use our online form to report a crime.
