Sherman College Completes Positive Visit with
Regional Accrediting Team
APRIL 16, 2001 - A team of higher
education administrators and faculty from the
southern United States completed an extensive
on-site evaluation of Sherman College recently
as part of the college’s pursuit of regional
accreditation with the Commission on Colleges of
the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
(SACS). The agency accredits area institutions
such as Duke University, the University of South
Carolina and Converse College.
Our interaction with the SACS Visiting Team
represented the culmination of more than two
years of work,” explained Brian J. McAulay,
D.C., Ph.D., interim president. “Our faculty and
staff invested long hours and significant energy
to conduct an extensive assessment of every
aspect of the college’s educational and
administrative operations and prepare a 300-page
Self-Study Report for submission to SACS prior
to their visit.”
When the team arrived on campus April 5, the
members met with faculty, staff and students to
determine if the college is operating in a
manner consistent with the Criteria for
Accreditation of the Commission on Colleges of
SACS. At the conclusion of the visit the team
prepared a written report for submission to the
Commission and conducted an exit interview with
senior college personnel.
The report from the visiting team was very
positive and helpful,” McAulay said. “We will
not receive notification of our accreditation
status until the Commission meets in June, but
we appreciate the time, hard work and feedback
we received from the visiting team. It is very
rewarding to receive external, objective
validation from an accrediting agency that
Sherman College is a well run, high quality
institution,” he said.
McAulay commended Leroy Moore, D.C., ‘76, senior
vice president for institutional advancement,
for his outstanding and tireless work in leading
the Self-Study process on campus.
Holding regional accreditation would facilitate
stronger relationships with other
SACS-accredited academic institutions, open
opportunities for research collaboration and
create the possibility of developing a
bachelor’s program at Sherman College.
