Decken Named Philosophy Chair

William M. Decken, D.C.

Associate Professor of Clinical Sciences William M. Decken, B.A., D.C., has been charged with being the leader in philosophical inquiry and the ongoing development of a solid, renowned philosophy program for Sherman College. Decken happily accepted these responsibilities and more late last year when he was named chair of the philosophy department.

“This is a very important appointment and carries a number of responsibilities that we know Dr. Decken will be successful in fulfilling for the college community and the profession,” said President Jerry L. Hardee, Ed.D. “Faculty members will look to Dr. Decken for information, innovation and encouragement on philosophical matters, and he will meet with them often to share information. The college will look to him to lead and mentor faculty and staff.”

Decken is a 1986 graduate of Sherman College and holds Bachelor of Arts degrees in environmental science and biology from Marist College (1979). At Sherman, he received the Milton W. Garfunkel Award, the highest award given at graduation. He joined the faculty following graduation and currently teaches Philosophy II, Media Communication, Subluxation Theory and Political Perspectives. He has maintained Family Straight Chiropractic, his private practice in Spartanburg, since 1986.

Decken is a member of the Federation of Straight Chiropractors and Organizations (FSCO) and is founder and president of the Palmetto State Chiropractic Association (PSCA). He was president of the FSCO from 1996-2000. He has been a member of the South Carolina Board of Chiropractic Examiners and served as secretary of the Straight Chiropractic Academic Standards Association from 1991-1995.

Sherman College named him Faculty Member of the Year in 1991 and Chiropractor of the Year in 1998. He received Sherman’s Service to the Profession Award in 1996. He was named Chiropractor of the Year in 1998 by the FSCO and in 1998 by the PSCA.

Former professor of clinical sciences and philosophy department chair Valerie S.
Pennacchio, B.S., D.C., left the college in September 2003 and has since joined the faculty at Palmer College of Chiropractic’s Florida campus.
