Whenever the call for
help is issued, Sherman students respond. During the Hurricane Katrina relief
efforts, many students gave their time and energy to provide for those in need.
Several students represented Sherman College when they drove to the local News
Channel 7 (WSPA) headquarters during a telethon for hurricane victims. They
walked into the building and were quickly put to work answering telephones and
taking pledges from the local community. Local TV personality Jack Roper was
ecstatic that our students took time out of their days to assist others who were
less fortunate.
Special thanks to the following students who participated in the telethon: Dan
Denette, Kristin Denette, Doug Mitchell, Robin Owen, Michael Pisani, Jimmy
Redondo and Jennifer Trimpi. We owe them a huge thank you for representing
Sherman College at the telethon.
While these students were busily working at a telethon, another student (and
September 2005 graduate) was busy on campus spearheading a clothing and water
drive. Cedric Smith initiated “Sherman Cares” and worked very closely with the
Office of Student Affairs to collect donations from the faculty, staff and
students of Sherman College for hurricane victims. Donated items were given to
the Salvation Army for distribution in Louisiana and Mississippi. Thank you,
Cedric!
I feel honored and blessed to work with students such as these every day. Their
generosity and concern for others is overwhelming and humbling. |
