Daria WinnickaCareer Day Brings Six New Applicants

by Admission Representative Daria Winnicka

More than 40 students traveled from as far away as Idaho to attend Sherman College’s Career Day on May 23 as part of Lyceum 2009. Of the 43 prospective students visiting us, an astounding 19 were applicants! Even better news – SIX more applications came in directly following Career Day. Many of these students will matriculate to Sherman for the summer quarter (which begins July 6) or fall quarter (which begins September 28).

It was very exciting to reacquaint with students who I’ve personally met on the road while visiting various colleges and universities. Students traveled from nine different states including Alabama, Idaho, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia. Even with the state of our economy, it’s reassuring to see that students are willing to travel far distances to visit our beautiful campus and surrounding area. To help, Sherman paid for their overnight accommodations in Spartanburg.

Lyceum Career Day, hosted by the  Enrollment Services staff, is an opportunity for prospective chiropractic students, their guests and family members

  • to learn about admissions and financial aid
  • tour the anatomy lab and health center
  • learn about digital x-ray and spinal screenings
  • listen to the experiences of current students and valued alumni
  • acquaint themselves to local businesses.

Even though it rained off-and-on for Career Day, many people decided to stay longer than just one night to tour the Upstate. Perhaps that’s another one of the reasons we got more applications in afterward – the area was named one of Relocate America’s Top 25 Places to Live and Go to School in 2007 and has also been rated a Top City in South Carolina and number 48 in the nation (Sperling 2007).

We’re already planning for Career Day 2010. Do YOU know of a prospective chiropractic student who might benefit from experiencing a day like this? We’re more than happy to add them to the list of students we invite. The more the merrier! Let’s hope the rain holds off for next year….
