Shadow DaySend a Prospective Student to
Shadow an Intern Day
, February 25

The comment we hear most often about why people choose Sherman is that when they visited the campus, they liked the people and the energy here. About 20 percent of people who visit campus career events choose Sherman and chiropractic. A perfect time for a prospective student to visit Sherman is on Shadow an Intern Day, when students get to spend time with interns in the health center. Two Shadow an Intern Days will be held this year: Feb.25 and July 29, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Prospective students will

  • Observe patient visits for screenings and adjustments
  • Learn about the daily responsibilities of a chiropractic intern
  • Tour our digital x-ray suite to see how chiropractic x-rays are taken
  • Learn about the different technique classes and the Clinic Challenge Experience
  • Get a transcript evaluation and advice about meeting pre-requisites

Shadow an Intern Day is the perfect way for prospective students to discover whether chiropractic is the right career. Help grow the profession by telling the people you know about Shadow an Intern Day and encourage them to become a part of the Sherman PRIDE.

Irwin Speaks at the 20th K. R. Jones Philosophy Forum

In the late 1980s, Ken R. Jones, D.C., started a group of philosophy forums to rejuvenate chiropractic philosophy in Columbia, SC. After he passed away, the South Carolina Chiropractic Association continued the forum and renamed it in honor of Dr. Jones. Speakers come from all over the country and donate their time on the podium to support chiropractic philosophy. A wide range of chiropractors attend of the forum, from local practitioners to college presidents.

This year’s speakers include Sherman’s own Vice President for Academic Affairs Bob Irwin, D.C., and Sherman alumni, Dick Plummer, D.C., who has spoken at the program every year since its inception, as well as Beth Ehlich. Other speakers include Drs. Ernie Panza (another 20-year veteran of the program), Don Parkerson, Carl Tompkins, Julie Peterson, Bobby Findley, John Boutwell and Jay Holder. The forum includes two hours of board requirements, so the 18-hour program may allow attendees to complete a full year of continuing education credits.

Proceeds from the Philosophy Forum help to fund the K. R. Jones Memorial Scholarship awarded by the South Carolina Chiropractic Association.

This year’s Forum will be held at Embassy Suites Hotel in Columbia, SC, Feb. 6-7. Registration is available on the SCCA website.  (http://www.scchiropractic.org/cde.cfm?event=287260)

The Paddens Refer Students into a New Scholarship

The Padden Five

The $5,000 Gary and Cathie Padden Scholarship has been established for the Paddens to award, in whole or in part, to any future chiropractic student(s) of their choice. The Paddens have referred current students Tiffany Padden, Abbi Vivoda, Ashley Stalmack, Jeannette Chomic and Nick Schuster. Vivoda and Padden, the final two students referred, enrolled earlier this month in the college’s Winter 2010 class.

Gary & Cathie PaddenThe My Scholarship program, which was introduced in 2003, rewards chiropractors and friends of the college who refer aspiring chiropractors to Sherman College by establishing scholarship funds in their names; it is the college’s way of showing appreciation for the extraordinary support referrers provide. Referrers earn $1,000 scholarship credit for each student referred upon the enrollment of that student at Sherman College.

“We are so grateful to Drs. Gary and Cathie Padden for the confidence they have shown in Sherman by referring students to us, and we are excited to celebrate this milestone with them,” says Vice President for Enrollment Services Lisa Hildebrand, M.A. “We know that the Paddens will continue to encourage them throughout their education here at Sherman, and we promise, in accordance with our mission, to educate, graduate and support them as they become competent, compassionate, ethical and successful doctors of chiropractic, whom the Paddens will be proud to welcome to the profession.”
