Meet the Trustees: Dr. John Hilpisch, Chairman
John Hilpisch likes to say he discovered chiropractic in 1991 after attending an A.D.I.O. seminar. This 1987 graduate of Northwestern College of Chiropractic is a native of Lake Elmo, MN. He is well-known for his love and teaching of upper cervical chiropractic and practice of the Blair technique. He opened a private practice in 1998 and has practiced there since. Hilpisch is certified board proficient in the Blair technique.
Dr. Hilpisch attended his first Sherman College Lyceum in 1992. The energy and passion he felt on campus from the students, alumni, faculty and staff made him feel as though he found a new home. The sense of belonging and a desire to help preserve the mission of Sherman is what prompted him to apply for a position on the Board of Trustees here
Since being on the board, Hilpisch says he has learned the importance of teamwork. That includes listening to the needs of the students, faculty, and administration, while fulfilling the obligations of the board and preserving the college’s mission of bringing chiropractic to the world.
As board chairman, Hilpisch’s duties now include building an effective governing board. “Current board members are extremely motivated, hard working and excited about Sherman's future so this makes my work easy,” he says. “The challenge is putting all the talent to use on various committees.”
Hilpisch served as committee chairman of the Annual Blair Society Conference for three years, was elected to the Board of Directors in 2003, and served as president of the Blair Society from 2005-2008. He was named Blair Chiropractor of the Year in 2005. In August 2008, he was elected to the Board of Trustees at Sherman College of Chiropractic, with his chair appointment effective March 2010. Hilpisch regularly mentors students, interns and doctors who are interested in practicing straight chiropractic and learning the Blair upper cervical technique.
Hilpisch attended St. Agnes High School in St. Paul, MN. There he met his wife, Liz, and the couple were married in 1983. He completed his undergraduate studies at Augsburg and Lakewood Colleges, where he played football, baseball and track. Hilpisch loves any kind of fishing and enjoys the sport whenever he can. He is a Fantasy Football fanatic, and in the fall he can be found glued to his TV on Sundays. In addition, the family has Minnesota Twins season tickets. Hilpisch is an avid music enthusiast, and although he isn’t politically aligned, is a huge Bruce Springsteen fan.
Hilpisch and his wife, Liz, are proud parents to six children; Frances, Angela, Caroline, Thomas, Maria and Monica. The family lives in the Lake Elmo area, a suburb of St. Paul. Frances is a student at Sherman College of Chiropractic and will graduate in March of 2011. Her husband, Chris Culbertson, is a 2009 Sherman grad practicing in the Greenville area.
Maria is taking her prerequisites for Sherman. Thomas, who is a corporal in the United States Marine Corps and currently fighting in Afghanistan, also plans to attend Sherman. Caroline is a senior at Texas Woman’s University where she is on scholarship for gymnastics, and her dad is her biggest fan. Angela is a full time student at University of Wisconsin River Falls and is Dr. Hilpisch’s computer consultant at his office. Monica loves horses and is a barrel racing champion.
