Hometown: Columbia, SC
Education: Augusta State University

Activities/Hobbies: I love spending time with my family and friends. On the weekends, I enjoy hiking, hanging out in downtown Spartanburg, and traveling as much as possible.

Why Chiropractic: Truthfully, chiropractic sort of fell into my lap. My best friend went to Sherman College and invited me to Lyceum. I immediately fell in love with the philosophy and mission of chiropractic. We have the ability as chiropractors to help others and empower people to choose a healthier, happier life.

Favorite thing about Sherman College: I love that Sherman feels like one huge family. Everyone knows your face, if not your name and your story. People are always willing to lend a hand or shed some advice. We truly have some of the greatest staff, team, and colleagues.

Favorite thing about the Upstate Region: The weather is beautiful. It is close to the mountains and not too far from the beach. There is always something going on and many festivities to attend.

Dr. Edgardo Rivera and Dr. Jillian Kersh were recently honored by Sherman College of Chiropractic in appreciation of their contributions, time and commitment to the college.

Anatomy Lab Manager Edgardo Rivera, M.D., was named Faculty Member of the Year. “Dr. Rivera came on board at Sherman College less than two years ago, but he has already won the hearts of our students,” says Dean of Basic Sciences George Luo, M.D., Ph.D. “He is an excellent lab manager and a great lecture assistant for anatomy classes. He always keeps the best interest of our students in mind.”

Dr. Rivera holds a pre-medical degree from Catholic University (1973) in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and an M.D. from Veracruz University School of Medicine (1978) in Mexico; he completed his internship in 1980 at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Ponce. He then joined the Puerto Rico Department of Health as medical director for a community ambulatory clinic, then served as Special Assistant to Puerto Rico’s Secretary of Health, assisting in the implementation of public policies across the island and supervision various offices and committees.

He has worked as a medical liaison for institutions with residency and fellowship programs and a division sales manager, unit director and managed care/hospital manager for several companies in the US and Puerto Rico. Dr. Rivera launched his own consulting and business development company from 2012-2014 and then began teaching human anatomy at the Inter-American University-Metro Campus. He joined Sherman College of Chiropractic as anatomy lab manager in June 2015. Dr. Rivera and his wife, Myrna Torres, have three sons, Edgardo, Alejandro and Gerardo, and three grandsons.

Director of Continuing Education Jillian Kersh, D.C., was named Staff Member of the Year. “Dr. Jillian Kersh has done a stellar job since taking over as the Director of the Continuing Education department at Sherman College a little over a year ago,” says Executive Vice President Neil Cohen, D.C., of her contributions to the college. “She has demonstrated extraordinary leadership skills as well as unmatched integrity when it comes to getting the job done right.”

A Michigan native, Dr. Kersh holds a bachelor’s degree in applied biology from Ferris State University (2006) and the doctor of chiropractic degree from Sherman College (2009). She practiced as a full-time associate in both South Carolina and Pennsylvania from 2010-2012. Following her return to South Carolina, she joined the college as director of the Reach Out and Recruit (ROAR) program in 2013, revitalizing that department’s efforts and making a positive impact on the college’s enrollment.

She was named director of continuing education in 2015. In that role, she develops and supports all continuing education (CE) programming for the college, including Lyceum, the International Research and Philosophy Symposium, and the Academy of Chiropractic Philosophers, as well as auxiliary CE programs offered both online and in person, across the U.S. and around the world. In the local community, Dr. Kersh is active with the Spartanburg Young Professionals and serves as a volunteer for Safe Homes/RAPE Crisis Coalition. In her spare time, she enjoys playing golf and reading.

Sherman College Engages Brailsford & Dunlavey to Guide Campus-Wide Planning

Sherman College Engages Brailsford & Dunlavey to Guide Campus-Wide Planning

Sherman College of Chiropractic has announced the engagement of planning and program management firm Brailsford & Dunlavey  (B&D) – with offices in Atlanta, Charlotte, New York and beyond – to guide the institution’s Campus Master Plan process, and to serve as Owner Representative.

The college has doubled its enrollment under the leadership of President Edwin Cordero, D.C., and anticipates continued growth, potentially doubling student enrollment again over the next decade. As one of just 18 chiropractic colleges in the nation and the only one in the Carolinas, Sherman College’s doctor of chiropractic program is unique in its approach to health care and known globally for producing doctors who are highly skilled in their delivery of chiropractic care.

Seeing the potential for further growth and impact, the Sherman College Board of Trustees authorized senior administration to develop strategic plans for the college, including a Master Plan for the college’s 88-acre campus situated between Upper Valley Falls and Springfield Roads in the Boiling Springs area. This process will include selection, managed by B&D, of architectural and construction management partners.

“Careers in chiropractic are in high demand as consumers turn to more natural and preventative approaches for their healthcare, and Sherman College is committed to help meet that demand,” said Sherman College President Edwin Cordero, D.C.. “Given the significant enrollment growth we have seen over the past five years, and given the anticipated growth in the chiropractic profession nationally in the coming years, we expect that interest from prospective Sherman College students will continue to grow in the future.”

According to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, chiropractic employment opportunities will increase “much faster than the average for all occupations,” with an expected bump of 17 percent this decade alone. These facts, coupled with Sherman’s elevated focus on enhancing the quality of the overall campus experience for its students, sparked interest in improving and expanding its physical environment.

The Master Plan process includes broad involvement from the campus community through focus groups, surveys and numerous working sessions. As development advisor for the Master Plan’s implementation, Brailsford & Dunlavey will manage all of the owner-related responsibilities associated with the capital projects, including budget oversight and management of project team members.

“We are excited to continue our meaningful working relationship with Sherman College through the implementation of a Campus Master Plan,” said Rebecca Geraghty, a senior project manager at B&D and the team lead at Sherman College. “The college’s strong leadership and ambition for improvement makes them an extremely enjoyable partner to work with. We look forward to helping Sherman realize its new vision for the campus and supporting its institutional purpose.”

With 23 years of experience as an advisor to higher education clients, B&D is regarded as an industry leader in the planning and implementation of facilities including student housing, student unions, athletics, foodservice, and campus recreation. Sherman will be supported by professionals out of B&D’s Charlotte and Atlanta offices, who also serve a number of other clients in the Upstate including Converse College, Limestone College, Presbyterian College, and the University of South Carolina.

Sherman College Earns 2017 Military Friendly® Schools Designation

Sherman College Earns 2017 Military Friendly® Schools Designation

Sherman College of Chiropractic has earned the 2017 Military Friendly® Schools designation by Victory Media. First published in 2009, Military Friendly® Schools is the most comprehensive, powerful resource for veterans today. Each year, the list of Military Friendly® Schools is provided to service members and their families, helping them select the best college, university, or trade school to receive the education and training needed to pursue a civilian career. This is Sherman College’s fourth consecutive year receiving the Military Friendly® designation.

A U.S. Navy veteran, Sherman College President Dr. Edwin Cordero said the Military Friendly® Schools designation has special meaning to him. “Sherman College has a tremendous opportunity to serve and honor our military service members who give so much to our country,” Dr. Cordero said. “We are eager to reach more military members and share with them a health care career that embraces their commitment to serving others. I think it is especially fitting, since Sherman College of Chiropractic holds service to others as a major component of its mission.”

Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from Victory Media’s proprietary survey. Ratings methodology, criteria, and weightings were determined by Victory Media with input from the Military Friendly® Advisory Council of independent leaders in the higher education and military recruitment community. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer) and loan default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.

“Our ability to apply a clear, consistent standard to the majority of colleges gives veterans a comprehensive view of which schools are striving to provide the best opportunities and conditions for our nation’s student veterans,” says Daniel Nichols, a Navy Reserve veteran and Chief Product Officer at Victory Media. “Military Friendly® helps military families make the best use of the Post-9/11 GI Bill and other federal benefits while allowing us to further our goal of assisting them in finding success in their chosen career fields.”

Sherman College of Chiropractic will be showcased along with other 2017 Military Friendly® Schools in the annual Guide to Military Friendly® Schools, special education issues of G.I. Jobs® and Military Spouse Magazine, and on militaryfriendly.com. For more information about Sherman College’s commitment to attracting and supporting military students, visit www.sherman.edu/militaryfriendly.

The Military Friendly® Schools list is created each year based on extensive research using public data sources for more than 8,800 schools nationwide, input from student veterans, and responses to the proprietary, data-driven Military Friendly® Schools survey from participating institutions. The survey questions, methodology, criteria and weightings were developed by Victory Media with the assistance of an independent research firm and an advisory council of educators and employers. Data calculations and tabulations were independently evaluated for completeness and accuracy by EY.

Meet Student Ambassador Letitia Clay

ambassadors-012

Sherman College Student Ambassadors lead tours, give health talks, help organize and lead campus visit events such as Showcase Sherman and represent the college in the local community and beyond.

Name: Letitia Clay

Hometown: Newport News, VA

Education: B.S. in Biological Science from Virginia Tech

Activities/Hobbies: Gym/running, tap dancing, theater arts, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Why Chiropractic: I choose chiropractic because I believe chiropractic is what our society needs. When it comes to healthcare, people are ignorant to the fact that our bodies were created to heal. Too many individuals are dependent upon medications and vaccines to do the job that our bodies were designed to do. Through chiropractic, I am able to communicate a message of hope to people and help them to live life at their best. Once I learned what chiropractic really is, it just made sense and lined up with the kind of doctor I want to be.

Favorite thing about Sherman: Sherman is one of the few schools that remains true to the philosophy of chiropractic. The philosophy-based curriculum is one of the qualities of Sherman I appreciate the most because I believe it is the foundation that sets students apart in the world to be the best chiropractors in the field. Chiropractic is a full package of science, art and philosophy, and every part must be utilized. I know that once I graduate I will have the necessary skills, confidence and knowledge to make a difference in the realm of chiropractic care. Also, Sherman has some of the most genuine and supportive faculty I could ever ask for in a college.

Favorite thing about Upstate South Carolina: The Upstate region has basically everything you need. Everything is within a few minutes’ drive, and that makes it very convenient for students.
