SABCA Club Embraces Inclusion and Service |

The American Black Chiropractic Association (ABCA) was founded in 1981 by Dr. Bobby Westbrooks, a chiropractor in St. Louis, Missouri. ABCA's mission statement is "Integrating and improving outcomes for people of color who are seeking the profession of Chiropractic." While ABCA is for professional chiropractors, the association is also supportive of students, offering two scholarships such as the Harvey J. Lillard Scholarship. Also, there are student chapters (SABCA) around the nation, including one of the clubs at Sherman College (a snapshot of a group at this month's meeting is shown above).
Sherman's SABCA club meets monthly and provides a supportive space for students of color in the chiropractic industry. It aims to create a platform where students can connect, share experiences and engage in meaningful discussions about diversity and inclusion. SABCA welcomes students at all stages of their academic journey to become part of the work of creating a more equitable and inclusive future for all chiropractors. While the club is named Black Chiropractic Association, it is open to students of any color, as inclusivity is one of the core principles.

Eric Gregory, an 8th quarter student who is the president of Sherman SABCA, says the club has 18 active members, and nine more have recently joined. Eric is excited about the new members and has ideas for SABCA engagement. He hopes to see the club reach out to high schools in the community to promote interest in chiropractic at an earlier age. SABCA also focuses on service in the community. It is a well-rounded club that enriches lives across Sherman College. The SABCA club's contribution to Sherman and our community is something to be proud of!

Sherman Recruiting and Admissions Hits the Road! |
On February 9th, Sherman College of Chiropractic reached out to potential students at the Benedict College Career & Graduate School Fair in Columbia, SC. The event featured insights from a Sherman alumni, Dr. Joe Messina '17, who is the owner of Vital Chiropractic in Lexington, SC, as well as a current student named Victoria Carroll. They teamed up with the admissions team to introduce Sherman College to an enthusiastic crowd, generating 20 substantial inquiries. We appreciate your support in our recruiting efforts!

| Harvey J. Lillard: First Chiropractic Adjustment
In September 1895, Harvey J. Lillard, a black entrepreneur, received the first-ever chiropractic adjustment. Mr. Lillard had been deaf in one ear for 17 years. After hearing his story about how he lost his hearing due to straining his back, Daniel David Palmer performed a chiropractic adjustment that restored Mr. Lillard's hearing back to normal. |

| Lyceum 2024: Ready, Set, GROW! May 2 - 4, 2024 This year's Lyceum will feature LaShawn Merritt (shown in photos), a three-time Olympic champion and eight-time World Champion in track and field.
Merritt will share with us his inspiring life story and discuss the unparalleled benefits that chiropractic care played in enhancing his world-class performances. Having a speaker of his caliber is an honor. Please watch for our social media posts for Lyceum updates. We encourage you to reshare posts to help spread the word. |
