A Salute to Service: Honoring Sherman's Military Veterans |
|
|
On the evening of Friday, September 6, Sherman College hosted "Salute to Service," a special campus event celebrating and honoring our military community, the students, faculty, and staff who have bravely served and continue to serve our country. The event featured guest speakers and brothers, US Navy Veteran Dr. Scott Garber and Retired US Navy Commander Michael Garber, who shared inspiring messages of encouragement with veterans and guests about serving their communities in new ways.
“I am at Sherman College of Chiropractic proudly celebrating our military heritage, honoring the brave men and women who serve our country. Tonight, my brother, CMDR Michael Garber, and I had the privilege of sharing our military experiences with students, spouses, and staff. It was a heartfelt moment, reflecting on how the discipline, resilience, and values we learned in the military have shaped our lives and professions,” said Dr. Scott Garber following the event. “For me, the military made it possible to pursue my dream of becoming a chiropractor, and I am grateful for the opportunities and support that service has provided. We stand in gratitude, united by a common purpose—to heal and serve. I couldn’t be prouder to support Sherman College of Chiropractic.”
Sherman President Dr. Jack Bourla shared the college’s intention to recruit even more veterans to the chiropractic profession and to Sherman as students. “Military veterans have a servant’s heart, which aligns perfectly with the chiropractic mission of helping others achieve a great life. Veterans also bring unique discipline, leadership and compassion, all essential qualities in chiropractic care. We want you to help us find veterans who would benefit from a Sherman education. We’ll take good care of them and produce great chiropractors who can continue their military legacy of service by empowering individuals and communities through excellent chiropractic care.”
Memorable highlights from the evening included veterans sharing their military experiences and their journey to chiropractic and Sherman. Chris Roberson, Sherman’s director of financial aid, discussed financial aid benefits available to veterans, notably the Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program, which assists qualified Post-9/11 veterans with tuition costs.
Air Colabella, a Sherman student and member of the Student Government Association, says the SGA organized the event to “recognize and thank not only the veterans for their service but also their families, who sacrifice more than we all realize." |
