Sherman Welcomes STAR Fellowship Cohort to Campus |
Sherman College welcomed the Spartanburg Talent and Retention (STAR) Fellowship cohort to campus on November 7, providing participating K-12 counselors an in-depth look at opportunities available to their students in the chiropractic profession. “Hosting the STAR Fellowship cohort on campus was an incredible opportunity to introduce local educators to the world of chiropractic,” explained Sherman President Dr. Jack Bourla. “By showing them the unique path to a doctorate of chiropractic degree at Sherman, we empower them to guide their students toward a fulfilling career that profoundly changes people’s lives.” |

The program, a collaboration between One Spartanburg and the Spartanburg Academic Movement, connects local school district career development counselors to educational/career pathways and industry/community leaders so they can better understand what employers need and how their students can prepare for jobs today and tomorrow after graduating from high school.
The visit included a welcome by Sherman’s Chief Operating Officer/Chief Financial Officer, Dr. Karen Canup; a presentation by Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Joe Donofrio, about Sherman’s curriculum, pathways, outcomes, and chiropractic careers; and a campus tour showcasing our beautiful facilities by Student Ambassadors Taylor Houck and Peri Peeler.
Fellowship participants meet monthly from September to May to better understand future talent needs and prepare students to be Spartanburg County’s workforce of tomorrow. Scheduled sessions include topics such as education, health care, advanced manufacturing, hospitality, an internship-focused session, and more. |

Supporting Community Partners: NAACP 38th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet
Sherman College proudly supported the West Spartanburg Branch of the NAACP's 38th annual Freedom Fund Fundraising Banquet on November 9, honoring a legacy of advocacy, unity and community empowerment. Funds raised at this year's event, themed "Striving Together," support the organization's ongoing goals and programs that directly impact improvements within the community.
Since its charter on July 3, 1980, the West Spartanburg Branch has impacted the Spartanburg community by offering educational scholarships, providing youth mentoring programs, conducting voter registration drives, and advocating for social justice. Amid the pandemic, the branch enhanced its focus on improving our communities' health through its active health committee. |
