'Rad Lab' Eases Students' Transition from Classroom to Clinic

It's ready! Welcome to Sherman's new Rad Lab, led by Dr. Patricia Kuhta, a collaborative effort between clinical and didactic faculty and administration. Its purpose is to provide students with a dedicated space for one-on-one analysis of patient X-rays by faculty and X-ray Interns (XRI) like Luke Orr, who is currently in his ninth quarter at Sherman. Orr says, “I’m most excited about how this lab will offer a much smoother transition from what we learn in the classroom to working in the clinic. Sample sets are great while we are in class, but so much is forgotten by the time we get to the clinic floor. The chance to schedule time with faculty to analyze actual patient films in the Rad Lab is priceless.”

Dr. Kuhta initially envisioned a Rad Lab a few years ago. However, the idea was set in motion when the administration at Sherman requested suggestions from faculty to improve teaching and provide better service to students during a faculty in-service meeting. They presented the Rad Lab as a solution, and momentum built from there. Dr. Kuhta, renowned as a "superstar faculty," led the creation of a lab plan and budget with the support of an exceptional core team who shared her vision: Drs. Dan Becker, Matthew Devlin, William Fehl, Allie Hamstead and Christine Theodossis. “This would have never happened without them and the support from our administration,” Dr. Kuhta states.

She adds, “X-ray analysis is an art that requires practice, and the Rad Lab provides the space to enhance that practice.” The opening of the Rad Lab is a huge step in realizing the faculty's vision to improve student preparation for clinical practice. Sessions are scheduled in 20-minute time slots, allowing for organized analysis of X-rays and fine-tuning of student work.

Students were thrilled to see the Rad Lab open and available

The lab is especially helpful for students who learn best through tactile activities. The goal of the lab is to provide a level of service for students like never before. Future plans include building a library of case studies.

The students aren’t the only ones excited about Rad Lab. “Faculty are here to instill confidence in our students,“ says Dr. Devlin, “and this lab offers an intermediary opportunity to coach them up. Plus, I’m excited to get in here. It’s just fun!”
