First Puerto Rico Chiropractic Symposium a Success!

Sherman College and the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Puerto Rico recently hosted the first Puerto Rican Chiropractic Research and Clinical Applications Symposium at the Catolica’s campus. The eventful weekend was the result of months of planning by Dr. Christopher Kent and representatives from Catolica University. The symposium featured remarkable speakers from both colleges, including Drs. Amy Spoelstra, Christopher Kent, Jaime Browning, and Ian Bulow from Sherman. The presentations were well-received, and collaborations between Dr. Spoelstra and Chair of the Department of Sciences, Dr. Zaira Mateo, have already begun.

Puerto Rican Chiropractic Research and Clinical Applications Symposium topics included:

  • Fine motor skills in neurodevelopmental disorders: Dr. Emmanuel Cruz
  • Pediatric chiropractic and neurodevelopmental disorders: Dr. Amy Spoelstra
  • Neuroplasticity and development: Dr. Zaira Mateo
  • Mental health and chiropractic: Dr. Christopher Kent
  • In health and disease: sympathetic transduction in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension: Dr. Paul Fadel
  • Clinical assessments: imaging and instrumentation: Dr. Jaime Browning
  • PUCPR: The dichotomy of chiropractic: Drs. Jennifer Sotomayer and Christian Ortiz
  • Integrating chiropractic clinical practice and basic science: Dr. Ian Bulow

Over 50 DCs and an equal number of students attended the event, which also included a philosophy discussion on Friday night. The discussion was well-attended by students, many of whom expressed a desire to attend Sherman and committed to come to Showcase Sherman Weekend. The symposium proved to be a great success, with strong relations between the two colleges being solidified. Plans are already underway to expand the scope of the symposium to include other local colleges in Puerto Rico for the 2024 event.

Walk to End Alzheimer's

On Saturday, October 28, a group of approximately 50 Sherman College students, employees, and their families (and a few pups) participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer's Disease in Spartanburg, SC. It was a beautiful day to honor and remember loved ones affected by AD.
