Looking Back: History of Sherman College's Ring-Out Ceremony |
|
|
Around 2004 or 2005, Shirlene Burnsed, the front desk supervisor at Sherman College Chiropractic Health Center, came up with the idea to celebrate the last patient visit of an intern's clinical requirements. She had a tiny bell on her desk and allowed the patient to ring it on their final visit. Initially, the bell was meant for interns who had struggled to reach this milestone, and it was the patient who rang the bell. The sound of the bell alerted others nearby who would come out of their exam rooms and offices to cheer the student's success.
Eventually, the ceremony evolved and the intern began ringing the bell instead of the patient. As years passed, the small bell was replaced with a more substantial one, and the ceremony became more structured. During the pandemic in 2020, ring-outs were scheduled in 15-minute segments and became a more significant celebratory occasion for not only the interns, but students, faculty, and staff as well. What started with a handful of interns has grown into the majority of them opting to Ring Out at the end of the quarter as they complete clinic requirements and are one step closer to graduation.

Nowadays, all students, faculty, and staff receive a calendar invitation to attend the ceremony. Interns may choose to ring the bell alone or with fellow interns. Some prepare speeches of gratitude or stories about their journey to this milestone. Family and friends are also invited to the ceremony, and traditions from different communities and cultures are encouraged and celebrated as part of the event. For example, when many interns from Puerto Rico celebrate, the event especially comes to life as friends and family bring drums and instruments to sing and wave the Puerto Rican flag.
The event has grown, with 30-50 people typically attending. Although other schools may have a bell-ringing tradition, our ceremony is unique to Sherman College Chiropractic Health Center's culture and is a significant milestone in every intern's journey. |

A note from author Jane Bird, marketing and communications manager: This story was written from an interview with Dr. Claudia Seay, '80, who has taught at Sherman for 36 years. As a new employee at Sherman, it has been my honor and delight to witness the Ring Out ceremonies at the end of the quarter. |
