It's Official! Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Held to Name
Dr. Joseph B. Strauss Bookstore |
Last Friday, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at Sherman College to officially memorialize Dr. Joseph Strauss, who is renowned in the chiropractic realm for authoring "blue books" that are still used as textbooks today. In honor of his legacy, the Sherman College bookstore in the Gelardi Student Center has been named the Dr. Joseph B. Strauss Bookstore.
Dr. Strauss passed away in April at the age of 78. His wife of 56 years, Iris, and one of his two daughters, Tracey Higley, attended and spoke at the ceremony. Iris shared how her husband would sit and just think for hours at a time. "He was a thinking man," she said, "always pondering how he could best articulate chiropractic philosophy." During the event, Dr. Bill Decken read passages from a tribute written by Dr. Claude Lessard, a close friend of Dr. Strauss from Pennsylvania. He stated that dedicating the bookstore to Dr. Strauss is a way of acknowledging and celebrating the enormous contribution he made to the field of chiropractic throughout his lifetime, and his leadership in shaping the future of chiropractic.
Dr. Joe Donofrio also shared, "Joe Strauss’s contribution to the profession cannot be overstated. His blue books should be considered canon for the chiropractor who seeks to understand our vital profession." Dr. Armand Rossi and Sherman Board member Dr. Judy Campanale also shared a few words remembering Dr. Strauss. |
| Sherman students, faculty and staff attended the event and enjoyed refreshments and fellowship afterward. |

Sherman Recruiting Hits the Road to the FFA Convention |
Sherman College of Chiropractic recruiting team attended the 96th National FFA (Future Farmers of America) Convention & Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana last week. Over 70,000 students from all 50 states, Washington D.C. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico attended the largest youth convention in the world. This seemed like a perfect fit for Sherman to attend with animal chiropractic gaining popularity.
Admissions Director Jacob Harris was joined by Dr. Russell Goff, '19 and Dr. Molly Hamilton at the event. Dr. Goff, the Development Coordinator at Sherman College, and Dr. Hamilton, an animal chiropractor from Iowa, both have prior FFA experience, were able to connect with attendees. More than 30 students were interested in becoming a chiropractor or animal chiropractor and were given information about how to plan their path through undergraduate studies to successfully attend Sherman College in the future. We hope to return to the National FFA Convention in 2024 to help inspire the next generation of chiropractors.
