Helene tried but her universal forces could not overcome our innate forces and Sherman College of Chiropractic remains standing and excited to welcome our new fall class of 41 eager students, our existing students, our staff and our faculty.
On Friday, September 27th a category 4 hurricane made its way from south Florida into South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and other states. The path of destruction left behind devastation, disaster and death. We are saddened by this loss, and especially the loss of life. Many remain missing and our hearts and prayers go out to them and their loved ones.
Sherman College and the surrounding areas were left without power (some continue to remain without power at the time of this writing), fallen trees, damaged property and injury.
With the anticipated arrival of new students for the fall quarter on Monday, September 30th, Sherman hustled to develop plans for how we were going to operate without power and with the unknown damage to our campus.
At 11:40 pm on Sunday night, power was restored. On Monday morning, the leadership team met to finalize how we were going to accept our new and returning students, our staff and our faculty. We offered both on campus and remote learning opportunities since many students were left without power. On Tuesday morning, 23 of our 41 new students showed up to campus and were joyously welcomed by faculty, staff and administration. While we had an excellent Orientation Day planned for all our incoming students on Monday the 30th, we did not have the opportunity to provide that orientation as many students were without power, internet nor an ability to receive our messages. Our Orientation Day will be Monday, October 7th.
We are eagerly awaiting everyone to come back to campus next week to enliven our community vibe that is always so present but lacking at this moment.
Sherman College of Chiropractic has the finest facilities department that a campus could ever ask for…they’re responsive, committed and hard-working. Within minutes of hurricane Helene's arrival, the guys were cutting down fallen trees, assuring that the buildings were safe and free of water damage, and looking after the campus as if it was their own home.
Our Sherman community is blessed beyond measure to have these fine people on our team. Shermies: when you see them on campus, please let them know how much you appreciate them. They take great care of us all. We are a blessed bunch.
The resilience of Sherman College is exemplified by its beauty, even when faced with major destructive forces.
Six days after the hurricane passed, our grounds look amazing. The sun is shining, and new students, faculty, and staff are coming to campus picking up where they left off before Helene hit. Sherman College is the place to be no matter what is thrown at us.
