Showcase Sherman Weekend Offers the Sherman College Experience

The Sherman College campus swelled with pride and excitement as the college hosted its most recent Showcase Sherman Weekend earlier this month. Showcase Sherman Weekend is the college’s quarterly VIP event filled with fun, passion and chiropractic; the event gives prospective students a chance to explore chiropractic and Sherman College and ignites their passion for the field. Attendees have the opportunity to tour campus, attend a palpation session, participate in leadership exercises and more.

While attendees started off a bit on the shy side, by the end of the weekend they were absolutely pumped about chiropractic and Sherman College, with many exchanging information with other attendees and Student Ambassadors before leaving Saturday night. By the end of the weekend, 59 percent of the attendees left as either an applicant or an accepted student. See photos and watch the video recap to see how it all went.

If you know a prospective student who has completed 60 semester hours of undergraduate coursework and is within two years of enrolling in our D.C. program, talk to them about the next Showcase Sherman Weekend, scheduled for November 4-5, and have them reach out to our admissions team. Limited space is available, so don’t delay!

Sherman Takes the Stage at Focus OKC

Sherman College was well represented at this year’s Focus OKC program, held July 29-30 at the Oklahoma City Convention Center. Senior Vice President for College Relations Dr. Neil Cohen returned to the event as emcee, and Development Coordinator Dr. Russell Goff met with donors and supporters of the college and maintained a presence at college’s booth. Sherman served as a gold sponsor at the event, which gathers chiropractic leaders and students to encourage, support, educate and challenge them to take “a pure, philosophical approach to chiropractic.”

Kenya, Treharne Join Test Committee

Two faculty members participated on the Part II Test Committee earlier this month at the headquarters of the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE) in Greeley, CO. Associate Professor of Basic Sciences Amilliah Kenya, M.S., D.C., A.C.P., and Assistant Professor of Clinical Sciences Cynthia Treharne, B.S., PA-C, D.C., assisted with test question writing and selection for the topic of associated clinical sciences. NBCE test committees bring together subject matter experts to write and select the questions/items used on its exams, according to the website.

Chiropractic colleges nominate faculty members to serve on the Part I and Part II test committees, while state licensing board members serve for Part III and Part IV. To ensure the fairness of all of its exams, the NBCE seeks committee members from every chiropractic college in the U.S. and from each state licensing board on a rotating basis.

Shermies Give Back at Fun[d] @ the Fr8

“Shermies Give Back!” was a student-driven philanthropy event hosted by the Department of Institutional Advancement in collaboration with Student Affairs in order to promote and create a culture of philanthropy among Sherman College students.

For a donation of $5 or more, students spent the evening at a local Spartanburg favorite, Fr8yard, where they enjoyed free food, live music, limited edition Sherman swag, gift card giveaways and a fun time with their fellow Shermies.

Students raised $223, and faculty and staff added to the fund, making the total raised for this event $358. All donations went directly toward the Sherman Pride Student Emergency Fund (SPSEF), which was created to aid students during times of financial hardship. Learn more about the SPSEF and donate here.

Faculty Members Earn Certifications

Two faculty members have earned certification with the Academy Council of Chiropractic Pediatrics (CACCP), and another has earned status as a Diplomate of the International Academy of Chiropractic Neurologists (IACN).

Health Center Case Doctor and Assistant Professor of Clinical Sciences Dr. Tara Madden and Assistant Professor of Clinical Sciences Dr. Princess Porter-Fowler have both been granted CACCP certification by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). According to the ICPA website, this certification marks the successful completion of a comprehensive 200-hour program with 20 course offerings. It is designed to expand professional ability in adjusting techniques, evaluation, and assessment of different stages of development: from pregnancy, birth, infancy throughout childhood.

Assistant Professor of Clinical Sciences Dr. Dan Becker recently completed a 300-hour post graduate program in chiropractic neurology and has been given status as a Diplomate of the International Academy of Chiropractic Neurologists. According to its website, IACN Diplomate members are highly trained and credentialed chiropractic neurologists and electrodiagnosticians seeking to provide superior patient care, continue their education and promote the neurological sciences.

Student Ambassador Spotlight:
Benjamin McBurney of Oakland, IL

Education: BA in general studies, minor in biology

Activities/Hobbies: Swing dancing, hiking, geocaching and spending time with my wife, Brittni, and dog, Hercules.

Favorite thing about the Upstate: I love that it has some bigger city aspects with still having a small town feel.

Why Chiropractic: Several moments, trials, and people have given me a burning desire to become a chiropractor (see full story here). Life is too short to live for ourselves. Chiropractic is a place where others come first, and lives are changed. I want to be a part of that.

About Our Ambassadors: The Student Ambassadors are a select group of students committed to representing the vision and mission of Sherman College.
