On November 7, Sherman College of Chiropractic welcomed the Spartanburg Talent and Retention (STAR) Fellowship cohort to campus. The visit gave local K-12 career development counselors a firsthand look at career opportunities in chiropractic care and the unique educational path available at Sherman College.
The STAR Fellowship, a partnership between OneSpartanburg and the Spartanburg Academic Movement, connects school district counselors with colleges, industry leaders, and career pathways. The goal is to help educators better guide students toward careers aligned with current and future workforce needs in Spartanburg County.
“Hosting the STAR Fellowship cohort on campus was an incredible opportunity to introduce local educators to the world of chiropractic,” said Sherman College President Dr. Jack Bourla. “By showing them the path to a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, we empower them to guide students toward a fulfilling, life-changing career.”
The visit began with a warm welcome from Dr. Karen Canup, Sherman’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer. This was followed by a presentation from Dr. Joe Donofrio, Vice President for Academic Affairs, who shared insights on Sherman’s curriculum, career outcomes, and the chiropractic profession’s growing impact.
Sherman’s Student Ambassadors, Taylor Houck and Peri Peeler, then led a guided campus tour. Attendees explored Sherman’s facilities and learned about student life, academic support, and the college’s hands-on approach to chiropractic education.
The STAR Fellowship program runs from September through May and includes monthly sessions focused on key industries like healthcare, education, manufacturing, and hospitality. The November session at Sherman College spotlighted chiropractic as a promising healthcare career for students across Spartanburg.
By participating in programs like STAR, Sherman College continues to strengthen its role in shaping the future workforce and promoting the value of chiropractic education.
