D.D. Palmer: The Founding Father of Chiropractic

Any discussion about influential chiropractors usually begins with the pioneering D.D.Palmer.D.D.Palmer is credited with discovering the benefits of chiropractic after performing the first adjustment on Harvey Lillard, a janitor who worked in his building. He had lost part of his hearing years earlier but recovered it after Palmer delivered an adjustment.

D.Palmersoon discovered the relationship between the spine and the body’s innate ability to heal itself, the body’s vital force. He founded the first school of chiropractic and trained others in his new, non-invasive approach to healthcare.

B. J. Palmer and the Expansion of Chiropractic Education

Chiropractic-Palmer

D. Palmer’s son, B. J. Palmer, was inspired by his father’s work and endeavored to advance the field of chiropractic even further. His efforts and hard work increased enrollment at the Palmer School of Chiropractic. He advanced chiropractic science by promoting objective chiropractic research into subluxations and their benefits.

Thomas A. Gelardi: The Founder of Sherman College

Of course, the growth of chiropractic didn’t just happen in the days of D.D. and B. J. Palmer. Since then, innovative chiropractic colleges have been founded by pioneering leaders such as Thomas A. Gelardi, D.C.
Gelardi was the named chiropractor of the century by the International Federation of Chiropractors and Organizations. Part of the reason he was awarded such a prestigious award is that he advanced the field of chiropractic by founding Sherman College of Chiropractic in 1973.

At the time, Gelardi was concerned that the field of chiropractic was straying away from its original goal. He wanted to make sure that future generations of chiropractic students were educated in the primary concepts of chiropractic and vertebral subluxation. Gelardi also wanted to design a rigorous curriculum for chiropractic students.

While Gelardi first dreamed of founding a chiropractic college while attending Palmer, he patiently worked on his goal for years until he established Sherman College in 1973. It was the first chiropractic college established in the Southeastern United States. Sherman attracts students from around the world because of its rigorous and unique approach to teaching the art, philosophy, and science of chiropractic.
