When students participating in the Practice Management Observational Elective (PMOE) program signed up for their final quarter’s observational elective course, they had no idea how much they would learn about managing quick adaptation in running a practice. Recognizing that all processes take time, individual practices had to change almost overnight to succeed and thrive.
The PMOE course lets students observe chiropractic offices worldwide during their final quarter. This elective, organized by the Business Department, provides students the opportunity to see all aspects of how a practice is managed and operated.
PMOE student participants are actively engaged at their individual office sites and logging their hours for completion. This allows them to see firsthand that no matter how much prep work a practice might do, they still will face external forces.
The students meet weekly on an accountability call with Instructor of Clinical Sciences Heath Treharne, D.C., to discuss any issues and share the adaptations each office has made to serve its patient population. This process gives the students a significant advantage by showing how multiple offices have changed, allowing them to learn about all the offices where students are observing and assisting.
The students can now see the puzzle pieces coming together. They can also observe the BUSI curriculum in action within an independent clinic’s daily operations. Experiencing this firsthand helps strengthen the core principles for business success.
An increasing number of students have shown interest in the PMOE program, with the summer quarter expected to have one of the largest classes in recent history. For details on participating as a student or potential field doctor, please email Dean of Clinical Sciences Dr. Armand Rossi or PMOE Coordinator, Dr. Heath Treharne.
More about PMOE:
The PMOE course is an option for 14th-quarter students who qualify to be released from the student clinic and observe chiropractic offices around the world during their final quarter. This elective, managed by the Business Department, allows students to see how a practice is run and operated from every perspective. Although there is no direct patient contact, this course offers students a valuable view of practice operations and provides them with a mentor as they begin to consider their own future in the chiropractic business.
