Thirty-One Complete Doctor of Chiropractic Program at Sherman College

Thirty-one students from around the world received the doctor of chiropractic degree from Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, SC, on Saturday, June 16, 2018. The college’s 133rd commencement was a shared ceremony for June and September 2018 graduates.
Leonardo René Ñeco Huertas of Puerto Rico (June class) and Dominic Geno Lupori of Colorado (September class), recipients of the Milton W. Garfunkel Award, each presented a farewell address to classmates. The Garfunkel Award is the highest award given at graduation. Students receiving this honor must have a grade point average of 3.5 or above, and in addition, best exemplify those qualities Sherman College would like to inculcate in all of its graduates: love of the profession, an understanding of the philosophy, willingness to share, and service to the college and community.
Ñeco and Lupori also each received the Clinical Excellence Award in recognition of their successful practices in the Health Center. This award is given to an intern in each class who has diligently worked to develop skills in the art, science and philosophy of chiropractic, maintained an A average in the clinical program and exhibited superior overall clinical performance and professionalism.
Spencer William Lewandowski of Michigan (June class) and Lupori (September class) received the Academic Achievement Award. The Academic Achievement Award is given to the individual in each graduating class who maintains the highest grade point average throughout his or her studies at Sherman College.
Letitia Chantal Smith of Virginia (September class) received the Service Distinction Award. This distinction is not given at every graduation; rather it is given to students who stand out for their significant and distinguished service contributions to Sherman College and the local community throughout their course of study. Smith was also recognized for her service as a Sherman College Student Ambassador. This group is responsible for giving campus tours to prospective students, as well as aiding in Showcase Sherman Weekends; Ambassadors embody the core values of Sherman College and founding principles of the chiropractic profession with the utmost professionalism.
The commencement address was given by Steve Judson, D.C., a chiropractic educator and trainer and a top speaker at chiropractic seminars and health events around the world. Since 2002, Dr. Judson has practiced chiropractic in Newington, CT, where he is owner and operator of one of the largest chiropractic facilities in the United States. He travels the world educating doctors and patients about the human body’s innate wisdom to heal itself via the central nervous system, and the supreme importance of the atlas bone (the first cervical vertebra). His movement, “Wake Up, Humans,” is devoted to helping men, women and children discover their destinies and unlock the incredible healing power inherent within every human body.
Sarah H. Stephens, D.C., associate professor of clinical sciences and a faculty case doctor at Sherman College, delivered the charge to the graduates. A 2003 Sherman College graduate, Dr. Stephens joined the college faculty in 2009 and has served as lead instructor for several courses. As a case doctor in the college’s on-campus Chiropractic Health Center, Dr. Stephens mentors and supervises interns in the provision of effective chiropractic care. In addition, she serves as evidence-informed practice facilitator in the clinic, where she develops workshops for interns and faculty to teach them how to understand, critique, and use evidence-informed practice in the clinical and classroom settings. She serves on several college committees and is a board member for several local and national organizations.
The doctor of chiropractic program at Sherman College requires students to complete approximately 4,600 hours (14 quarters) of classroom and laboratory study and also includes an internship in the college’s on-campus Chiropractic Health Center. To enter the D.C. program, students must have at least 90 semester hours of college-level courses, including courses in the sciences.
