Sherman’s Delegates

The Sherman College Chapter of the World Congress of Chiropractic Students (WCCS) sent two delegates, Charmi Patel (chapter president and head delegate) and Ali Fitzgerald (vice president) to the 41st Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Brisbane, Australia June 30-July 6. This year’s Congress welcomed 137 delegates from 27 chapters, which set a record for the largest AGM yet.

During the students’ week in Australia, days were spent in Congress and evenings featured an array of activities from scavenger hunts to community service opportunities. Being a part of the Congress was such an amazing experience, and it truly gave light to how important this organization is to both students and the future of the chiropractic profession.

Congress was held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., if not later, Monday through Saturday. While in Congress, all delegates were required to abide by Robert’s Rules. Two delegations, Zurich University and London South Bank University, were voted into the organization by the existing delegations.

During Congress the delegates discussed, voted on and passed many proposals, while only declining one. This may seem simple, but there was much discussion, debate, and amendments added to each proposal. Two proposals in particular took the most time to discuss; these proposals could not pass together, but discussed the future of the Board of Directors, now renamed the Team of Officials, as joined by the Regional Coordinators.

The proposal that did not pass sought to have delegates from any chapter run for specific positions on the board instead of each region voting a delegate and then positions being decided. This proposal was not passed because it was decided that it would take away from the diversity and representation of regions on the board. Discussing each proposal in-depth showed the importance and significance of all decisions being made.

Another hot topic was brought to light by Life University, but supported by many, on our first day. As stated in the 2019 AGM Congress Summary Report, the discussion was regarding the “integrity and neutrality of our organization.” There was much discussion about the vitalistic chiropractic schools being underrepresented on the board, but the support and professional discussion following the concerns raised further showed the unity and integrity of our organization. WCCS developed and will continue to document all sponsorship and event support toward the organization. This transparency helps all chapters to know that they are being represented and that the diversity and neutrality of the organization is being upheld.

Being a part of the WCCS helps students develop qualities to last a lifetime. These qualities range from public speaking and communication skills to leadership opportunities and organizational skills, and much more. WCCS gives students and young professionals a voice in the chiropractic world now to help determine the future of our profession.

A huge way that the organization is working on this is by building interprofessional relationships. Very often we meet professionals, or have patients avoid chiropractic because of professionals who do not understand what chiropractic truly is and what it can do to help the population. By building relationships now, it gives hope to the future of our profession to stand strong through scrutiny and unite through diversity. After all, the purpose of the World Congress of Chiropractic Students is to advance and unite the global chiropractic profession through inspiration, integrity and leadership.
