Sherman College of Chiropractic recently honored Carolyn Best, M.T., and Amy Carlson, B.S., in appreciation of their contributions, time and commitment to the college.
Laboratory Instructor of Basic Sciences Carolyn Best, B.A., M.T. (ASCP) SH, was named Faculty Member of the Year. She joined the college in 2003 as a lab assistant and through the years has taught courses and tutored students in histology, microbiology and laboratory diagnosis. Best says she feels honored to receive this award. “I love my students,” she says. “They have such good energy and they keep me young.”
Vice President for Academic Affairs Joe Donofrio, D.C., ’94, A.C.P., says the honor is well deserved. “Mrs. Best is one of those teachers who is always willing to do whatever it takes to give our students the best learning experience,” he says. “The fact that she has been voted as Faculty Member of the Year is a tremendous testimony to her deep and meaningful impact on our student body. We are so thankful for her.”
Best graduated from Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA, and completed her clinical training at Williamsport Hospital. She is a Medical Technologist, board certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology and has a specialty board certification in hematology. Best has worked in hospital laboratories for 45 years; in addition to teaching at Sherman College, she works in microbiology at St. Luke’s Hospital in Columbus, NC. At home, she keeps busy with four rescue dogs and enjoys reading.
Teaching and Learning Specialist Amy Carlson, B.S., was named Staff Member of the Year. She joined the college in September 2018 and has made an impressive impact in a short period of time. In her role at the college, she provides functional and technical support for programs directly related to classroom instruction, including the college’s iSherman Initiative, iBook development and operational support, the Schoology learning management system, electronic testing and more.
“In her time at Sherman, Amy has become an invaluable addition to the Teaching and Learning Center,” says Director of Teaching and Learning Billie Harrington, Ph.D. “She embodies a genuine commitment to helping faculty and students without hesitation. Faculty love her, students adore her and I am delighted to have her as part of our team.” One of the primary duties of the Teaching and Learning Center is its service as an educational support unit for faculty and students. “Amy is cheerfully dedicated to this element of her position,” Harrington says.
Carlson has extensive experience in adult education, training, teaching, course and curriculum development and creating training resources. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Lander University and has an elementary education teacher certification from Clemson University. She enjoys spending time with her family, attending sporting events with her nephews and reading.
