Nicole Mercado Named Student Leader of the Year by Sherman College of Chiropractic

Student Ambassador Mercado

Sherman College student Nicole Krystal Mercado Zapata was recently named Student Leader of the Year by Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, SC, in appreciation of her contributions, time and commitment to growing the chiropractic profession. This award is presented to an exceptional student leader who has participated in a number of recruiting activities leading to the matriculation of students at Sherman College.

Mercado will graduate in June 2020; she is originally from Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. She is proud to have served as a Student Ambassador for 13 quarters, providing inspiration and guidance to prospective students during campus visits and the college’s premier recruiting event, Showcase Sherman Weekend. “The core of this program is upholding the values of Sherman College and the principles of the chiropractic profession,” Mercado shared. She served one year as secretary of the Student Ambassadors and was also president of the Community Service Club.

Mercado is engaged to Francisco Polanco, and they have three children, twin sons Jaysuan & Josuan, and a daughter, Chelsy, who is a Zumba Kids instructor. “As a family we love to serve God, and our biggest satisfaction is to bring happiness to others,” said Mercado. She is ready to bring chiropractic to the world by starting her career as an associate doctor of chiropractic in the southern area of the U.S.

Sherman College named its 2020 award recipients as part of Lyceum, a homecoming and continuing education event attended by hundreds of chiropractors and students throughout the U.S. and internationally. Lyceum is held each May and involves three days of seminars, special events and other programs; this year’s Lyceum was held as a live-streaming event for the first time ever to preserve this crucial continuing education opportunity for Doctors of Chiropractic. More than 700 people participated.
