Sherman College took top honors in five categories of the 2020 Media Women of South Carolina (MWSC) Communications Contest; three entries were awarded second place, and another was recognized with an honorable mention. The contest, sponsored by the state affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW), encourages and rewards excellence in communication.

The college’s first-place projects included an advertisement for the Chiropractic Health Center (single advertisements for print or electronic publication), the Gelardi Student Center Ribbon Cutting (marketing campaign), the college’s Excel alumni magazine (publications regularly edited by entrant – magazine), the enewsletter Sherman Shares (electronic newsletter – nonprofit, governmental or educational), and a speech written for Lyceum 2019 (speech).

Second-place entries included an admissions brochure (brochures – nonprofit, government or educational), a speech written for the college’s Porter Scholarship Banquet (speech), and the college’s Excel alumni magazine (publications regularly written by entrant – magazine). The enewsletter Sherman Shares was also recognized with an honorable mention (publications regularly written by entrant – newsletter).

Senior Director of Marketing and Communications Karen Brower Rhodes, M.B.A., produced these communications in 2019 as part of initiatives spearheaded by the Office of Institutional Advancement and Public Relations. First-place award winners for South Carolina will move on to the national contest for judging next month.

Feedback from the judge cited the appeal of the spoken word as well as print and multimedia publications in their relative categories. “I love the minimalism of this piece,” the judge commented regarding the college’s advertisement for Spartanburg Little Theatre event programs. “It’s eye-catching and informative but doesn’t overwhelm the reader with too many messages.”

The judge declared the Gelardi Student Center Ribbon Cutting marketing efforts as “a fantastic multi-channel campaign” that adapted its message and imagery to the appropriate channels and audiences. In addition, she described the college’s revamped Excel alumni magazine as “information-packed without being text heavy — a huge challenge for [an alumni] magazine. Well done!”

This is not the Public Relations Office’s first time receiving honors from MWSC or NFPW. Last year, the college had six first-place and one second-place awards in the state competition, with five taking home second place, third place and honorable mention prizes at the national level. Additional projects have been recognized nationally throughout the years, with a print piece for prospective students taking first place in the nation in 2014.
