Online CE Spotlight: David Smith, DC

Dr. David Smith

Dr. David Smith has been a practicing doctor of chiropractic in central Pennsylvania since 1982. He graduated from the ADIO Institute of Straight Chiropractic and has felt motivated to be very active in the chiropractic profession ever since. His motivation for the profession went on to inspire his daughter, Breanna Smith Powderly, DC, to graduate from Sherman College of Chiropractic in 2017 and she now practices in the region with her father.

We asked Dr. Smith some questions about his CE content and his passion for the chiropractic profession.

Q: What motivates you to provide CE content for the profession?

A: Being active in the state organization (Chiropractic Fellowship of Pennsylvania) I was tasked with providing quality CE that was practical for the average practitioner. While researching required subjects (documentation and ICD coding) I started informally providing seminars to the profession. A State Board member attended my course and encouraged me to apply to chiropractic colleges to teach CE and the first three I applied to said “yes.”

Q: What do you hope to have DCs achieve by taking your courses?

A: Safety. Not just at a professional level regarding competence and X-ray safety but also to keep their license safe. Improper documentation (so much has changed since we graduated) and required courses (Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting) put the burden on the practitioner to keep current or they are unable to renew their license. Our organization provides our members with required courses and present them in a manner that is easy to put into practice on Monday morning.

Q: Who inspires you professionally?

My first terminology instructor was Christopher Kent. I will leave it at that.

Q: How do you recharge, or do you have any tips on maintaining longevity in this profession?

A: No tips. I love this profession and cannot wait for the weekend to be over so I can go back into the office. I still get giddy when I unlock the office door.

Q: Where do you see the profession going in the future?

A: I am very optimistic that our message of health from Above Down Inside Out will only grow stronger. I have surrounded myself with positive people and organizations, patronizing New Beginnings and Sherman’s Lyceum. The longevity of those high energy meetings will last as long as our principles.

Q: What is your favorite social media platform? How can people follow/connect with you?

A: Most effectively through Facebook by contacting our state organization. The Chiropractic Fellowship of PA posts inspiration and information and is very easy to interact with. We are past the era where every chiropractor feels they are alone in a world dominated by medicine so we should take advantage of frequent communication with our like-minded peers.
