College Publications, Communications Receive National Recognition

Six of Sherman College’s key marketing and communications projects have been recognized at the national level, with one receiving first place honors and others taking home second place, third place and honorable mention prizes in the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW) Communications Contest. Before advancing to the national contest, an annual competition that encourages and rewards excellence in communication, the entries won first-place honors in Media Women of South Carolina’s statewide contest. More than 2,000 entries from 39 states were submitted in this year’s contest.

Sherman College’s Brand Guide took first place in the nation in its category of public relations materials (catalog/manual/handbook). The college received second place nationally in three categories, including its Instagram presence (social media – nonprofit/government/educational), Community Impact Report (public relations materials – report), and COVID communications (crisis communications campaign). Earning third place was a speech written for Lyceum 2020 (speech), and earning honorable mention was the college’s Excel magazine (publication regularly edited by entrant, magazine/magapaper).

Senior Director of Marketing and Communications Karen Brower Rhodes, M.B.A. and Communications Coordinator Erica Martin developed these communications in 2020 as part of initiatives spearheaded by several departments, including Marketing and Communications, Institutional Advancement, and Admissions.

“Karen and Erica’s work in elevating and standardizing the Sherman brand across all internal and external communications helps the college convey a unified message,” said Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement Dr. Jillian Farrell. “This important work allows the college to leave a larger footprint in the chiropractic profession in several avenues, and I am continually amazed by the thoughtfulness, execution, and creativity that goes into each message they create or collaborate on.”

This is not the Public Relations Office’s first time receiving honors from MWSC or NFPW. Last year, the college had five first-place, three second place and one honorable mention award in the state competition, with four of those taking home second place and honorable mention prizes at the national level. Additional projects have been recognized nationally throughout the years, with a print piece for prospective students taking first place in the nation in 2014, and now another first-place prize for its Brand Guide in 2021.
